In week 6 we emphasized that while many other religions grew out of a text, Christianity is unique in that it grew out of an event (i.e. the resurrection of Jesus). Accordingly, those books that the early church recognized as authoritative were those books that had the closest association with Jesus.
This led us into a discussion on the canon of Scripture. We discussed the causes, and criteria of canonicity for the New Testament, and we established the authority of the Old Testament based on the views of Jesus who considered even the punctuation of the Old Testament to be authoritative (Matthew 5:18).
